💛Childhood Survival Mode💛
Some people do not simply walk into a room, they scan it.
They notice the slightest shift in someone’s expression, tone of voice or emotional energy. They can sense tension before a word has been spoken.
For those who grew up in unpredictable or emotionally unsafe environments, this heightened awareness may not simply be intuition. It may be hypervigilance, a protective response developed during childhood.
When a child grows up around anger, emotional withdrawal, inconsistency or instability, their nervous system can learn to remain constantly alert, anticipating what might happen next.
What began as a necessary childhood survival strategy can continue into adulthood, influencing relationships, emotional regulation, anxiety and our ability to feel safe.
In this video, I explore childhood survival mode, the impact of childhood emotional trauma and how hypervigilance can become an unconscious pattern.
Through trauma informed psychotherapy, inner child work and greater self awareness, we can begin to recognise these protective adaptations and develop a deeper sense of emotional safety.
You survived your childhood. You do not have to spend your adulthood still living in survival mode.
